Summit II: “Readers to Achievers,” 1999
 
Summit 1999 - Readers to Achievers The second Wake Education Summit grew from the first and engaged the public in specific action steps to address achievement of Goal 2003. The Summit asked participants to consider what the schools could do in order to achieve an ambitious academic achievement goal. Public priorities included focussing on technology, communications and the school/family connection. Educational leaders used these results in setting priorities for the 1999 bond referendum.

The top 10 recommendations from Summit ’99:
1. Support the role of parents with schools.
2. Expand technology training for teachers (Technology Connections program).
3. Establish and enforce high standards for student behavior.
4. Pay competitive salaries.
5. Provide more technical support at schools.
6. Provide up-to-date equipment and wiring, cabling and hookups.
7. Communicate the importance of reading to every child.
8. Provide tutors/mentors to all students not currently performing at grade level .
9. Improve communication with community.
10. House all students in classrooms appropriate for learning.
